A horrific incident took place on the night of 21 June 2025 in Dhobghatta, a small village in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh. Radheshyam, his wife Rangubai, elder daughter Asha and younger daughter Rekha, all four went to the field and consumed poison together. They were admitted to different hospitals, but after several hours and two days of efforts, all four died by 23 June.
Four people lost their lives
Radheshyam (aged around 50 years): He was a simple farmer who spent his entire life in the fields. He belonged to the tribal Dola community and was considered a calm, sensible and just man in the village. He had three children, two daughters and a son.
Rangubai (about 48 years): She was a housewife. The responsibility of the entire house and children was on her. Her husband used to do farming and Rangubai used to take care of the house.
Asha (23 years): She was the eldest daughter who had studied till Class 10. She helped both in the fields and at home. The family had high hopes for her education and marriage.
Rekha (15-16 years): She was the youngest and most fragile. She was just a teenager, went to school and was full of dreams. She fought death in the hospital till the end, but could not survive.
What was the reason for suicide?
This is a very shameful incident of Dewas district. It is being told that Radheshyam’s son Sohan (alias Pappu) had run away with his own aunt. This news spread like fire in the entire village and people considered it a big sin. Due to this the family had to face taunts, embarrassment and defamation in the village.
People started taunting them on every small thing. This was what was being said. This stigma and the pressure of society became difficult for this family to bear. And due to this reason, they took the step of suicide.
Incidence and treatment
21 June 2025: All four went to the field and consumed poison. Radheshyam was taken to a private hospital, but he died there. 22 June 2025: Rangubai and Asha’s condition deteriorated. Doctors tried to save their lives, but both died. 23 June 2025: Rekha, admitted in the ICU, also died two days later.
Treatment started from Dewas to Indore’s Index Hospital, but due to lack of timely treatment and medicines at the Primary Health Center (PHC), the condition of the patients kept deteriorating. By June 22, three deaths had occurred. Rekha remained admitted in the ICU till the end, but she also died on June 23.
Police investigation and legal status .
Initial police investigations have revealed that the family was internally troubled and was facing taunts and social boycott from the villagers. But the investigation into the real reason is still on.
The police have registered Case No. 288/01.07.2025 under Sections 108, 74, 296 and 351(3) of the IPC, which deal with abetment and abetment to suicide.
A special investigation team has been formed and some people have been called for questioning. No suicide note has been found yet, but the police are trying to find out who pressurised or harassed them.
