On June 12, 2025, at around 1:39 pm IST, Air India Flight AI‑171 (Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, registration VT‑ANB) suddenly lost control after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and within seconds crashed into the doctor-student hostel of B.J. Medical College in Meghni nagar area with a massive explosion.
Aircraft and Flight Details
• Aircraft model: Boeing787‑8 Dreamliner
• Registered number: VT‑ANB
• Route: Ahmedabad – London (Gatwick)
• Flight number: AI171 (ICAO AIC171)
• Passengers and crew: 230 passengers + 12 crew members (2 pilots + 10 cabin crew) total 242 people
Pilots and Senior crews
• Captain: Sumeet Sabharwal – around 8,200 hours of flying experience
• Co-pilot: Clive Kunder – around 1,100 hours of experience
• Cabin crews – 10 members including air hostesses and flight service members
Accident Time
1:39 pm IST: Takeoff from runway 23 and the aircraft suddenly lost altitude and speed in a matter of seconds, after which the captain sent an emergency mayday call. Last communication with ATC was lost soon after. Around 1:44 PM: The aircraft hit the hostel building, causing a massive fire and explosion. The crash site was in the hostel premises of B.J. Medical College, just opposite the Civil Hospital.
Horrific consequences of the flight
• 241 passengers died, only one passenger left – Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was on seat 11A and survived with injuries.
• About 28 people were killed in the hostel building on the ground, including more than 50 medical students and staff injured; some students were reported missing.
• Total: 269 people killed (241 in the aircraft + 28 on the ground, hostel students and workers) and about 61+ injured.
Initial Information on Cause
• Initial indications suggest engine thrust had suddenly reduced soon after takeoff
• The aircraft is believed to have failed to gain sufficient altitude during takeoff and is being investigated for a possible stall condition, incorrect position of flaps or landing gear.
• Some experts suggested a bird hit was possible, but others said it was unlikely as pilots are trained for this situation and the plane would have remained flyable for some distance.
• The weather was not a major deterrent – the day was clear, bright, with temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius.
Only One Passenger Survived
Vishwash kumar Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian origin, was on seat 11A; he suffered serious injuries but survived. He was admitted to hospital, PM Narendra Modi and Hyderabad Home Minister Amit Shah visited him. He said the plane broke apart soon after takeoff, he was thrown out and sounds of explosions were heard.
Affected communities
Pilot and Co-pilot killed: Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and co-pilot Clive Kunder tried to save the plane till the last moment. But due to heavy technical failure and loss of control, both of them died on the spot along with the plane.
Death of cabin crew members: There were 10 cabin crew members on board AI-171, Nganthoi Sharma, Lamnunthiem Singson, Maithili Patil, Deepak Pathak, Saineeta Chakravarti, Roshni Songhare, Aparna Mahadik, Shradha Dhavan, Irfan Shaikh and another member. All died in the plane crash.
Death of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani:
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was on board Flight AI-171 at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, he also died in the plane crash. This incident caused deep grief in the state politics and the general public.
Dr. Pratik Joshi and his family death: Dr. Pratik Joshi had been in London for six years and was dreaming of settling his family there. Two days ago, his wife Dr. Komi Vyas had left her job in India. Everyone including the children were ready to go to London. But the dreams remained unfulfilled in the accident.
Passengers died in the accident: A total of 230 passengers lost their lives in the Air India AI-171 accident, including 169 Indian citizens, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese and 1 Canadian citizen. Among the dead were 2 infants and 12 children, making this accident even more heartbreaking. The deceased included doctors, senior citizens and entire families, sending a wave of grief across the country.
Impact on Doctor Student Hostel: The Air India plane crash damaged the Doctor Student Hostel building in Ahmedabad. 28 people died in the hostel building on the ground, and more than 50 medical students and staff were injured. In the chaos, a student jumped from the second floor to save his life.
Aircraft Black box and direction of investigation
The black box was found undamaged, so the data is likely to be safe. The FDR will contain information related to the flight of the aircraft (altitude, speed, engine and system data). The CVR records the conversations in the cockpit, communication between the pilots and ATC, alarms and sounds.
DGCA, AAIB, Boeing, American NTSB and Britain’s AAIB are jointly investigating. It may take about a week to get the initial information of the data obtained from the black box.
Rescue and Emergency Response
• Teams of NDRF, IAF, BSF and NSG reached the spot.
• The bodies are being identified through DNA testing at the Civil Hospital.
• The black boxes (flight data and cockpit voice recorders) were recovered and sent for investigation.
Government and Airlines Response
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah visited the spot and expressed solidarity with the victims.
• Tata Group has announced ₹1 crore financial assistance for the families of each deceased victim in the Air India Express tragedy, showing their commitment to supporting those affected.
