Indonesia Ship Fire: A massive fire suddenly broke out in the KM Barcelona VA ferry sailing in the sea near North Sulawesi, Indonesia. More than 500 passengers were on board. Indonesia Ship Fire – When and where did the accident happen?
On Sunday, July 20, 2025, at around 1:30 pm (local time), a massive fire suddenly broke out on the KM Barcelona VA ferry sailing in the sea near North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The ferry was going from Talaud Islands (Melonguane) to Manado and the accident happened near Talisei Island.
Black smoke and flames began to rise from the rear and upper deck of the ship. Passengers panicked and many jumped into the sea to save their lives, some jumped carrying children and infants in their arms.
Rescue and casualty information after Indonesia Ship Fire
Total passengers: The initial list had 280 names, but during the rescue it was found that 575 people were on the ferry. This means that the correct information of the passengers was not kept.
People rescued: 575 people were rescued safely. This included a 2-month-old infant who had sea water enter his lungs, but now he is fine.
Deaths and missing: So far 3 people have been confirmed dead, including a pregnant woman. 2 people are still missing and their search is still on.
Injured people: Around 18 people have been injured. The fire left some people with burn injuries, while others struggled to breathe due to the thick smoke. Many were hurt when they jumped into the sea to escape including several children.
Government action
The rescue operation was led by the Manado SAR team, Indonesian Navy and Army. Rescue teams took the survivors to safe locations on Ganga Island and nearby areas. Authorities have set up a special center at Likupang Port to inform relatives and provide assistance.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Initial reports suggest that the blaze began in the rear or engine area of the ferry.

Indonesia is an island country where ferry travel is common, but such accidents occur frequently due to lack of safety standards, overcrowding and misinformation among passengers. A few days before this accident, 19 people died in another ferry accident near Bali.
