A heartbreaking incident took place in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on 21 July 2025. About aircraft and pilot

Aircraft: F-7 BGI (a supersonic training and fighter aircraft made in China)

Pilot: Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Tauqir Islam.

He was an experienced pilot and was on a regular training flight. As soon as he took off, he realized the technical fault and tried to turn the plane away from the densely populated area. According to the statement of the Bangladesh Air Force, the pilot tried till the last moment to make the accident happen in an open space, but the balance of the plane had deteriorated and it collided with the school building.

How did the accident happen?

According to the preliminary report of the Air Force, the plane took off from the airbase in Dhaka a few minutes after 1 pm. Moments after takeoff, the pilot got a signal of technical failure in the plane. He contacted the control center and immediately tried to turn the plane towards an empty area. But by then it was too late.

At around 1:05 pm, the plane collided with a two-storey building of Milestone School and College located in Uttara area of Dhaka. The collision was so strong that pieces of the plane penetrated the roof and walls of the school. After this there was a huge explosion and fire and smoke spread all around.

Status of dead and injured

Total deaths: 27 (17 children, 1 pilot, 9 others – teachers/parents)

Injured: More than 171 injured, of which 50+ have been admitted to the burn hospital due to burn injuries. The age of the injured students is reported to be between 8 to 14 years.

The National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery, Dhaka, has the most number of injured admitted. Blood donation drives were launched in several hospitals as the victims needed blood immediately.

Investigation and Actions

The Bangladesh Air Force has formed a special committee to investigate the accident.

The plane’s black box and control logs will be examined to find out the cause of the technical fault.

Some experts believe that this could be the result of negligence in the use and maintenance of old training jets.

Principal Advisor (Interim Prime Minister) Mohammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

Tuesday (July 22) was declared a national day of mourning.
