Uttarakhand flood news: On 5 August 2025, at around 1:40 pm, a cloud burst in Dharali village of Uttarkashi and after this there was a massive flood in the Kheer Ganga river. This village is on the Gangotri Highway, and is located just one kilometer from Harshil. The journey to Gangotri Dham starts from here, so this area is always full of travelers and tourists.

Losses and missing of people

At least 4 people have been confirmed dead.

More than 60 people are missing or feared trapped under the rubble.

At least 9 army personnel are also missing, who had a camp in Harshil.

The cloudburst completely destroyed 20 to 25 hotels, guest houses, shops, and houses.

Many villages have lost contact, mobile networks have been shut down and roads are closed.

There has been massive destruction along the Kheer Ganga river as well as in Dharali and nearby Sukhi Top area.

Rescue operation – life saving work

Teams of Uttarakhand Police, SDRF, NDRF, Army and ITBP reached the spot immediately after the incident. Authorities first deployed 3 NDRF teams, each consisting of 35 personnel. Officials later airlifted more teams from Dehradun and Delhi using helicopters.

Cadaver dogs (special dogs that sniff dead bodies) have also been deployed for the first time to recover bodies buried under the debris.

ITBP rescued 37 villagers safely, including 22 men, 11 women and 4 children. AIIMS Rishikesh and other hospitals in the state have been put on alert.

Traffic is completely closed on Dharali, Sukhi Top, Gasku, Malghat and Dharchula-Gunji road due to heavy debris and stone fall. Jyotirmath-Malari motor road has also been washed away. People have been advised not to travel.
