Who is CP Radhakrishnan?

C. P. Radhakrishnan was born on 20 October 1957 in Tiruppur city of Tamil Nadu. C. P. Radhakrishnan belongs to the Kongu Vellalar Gounder community. He was active in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its political predecessor, the Bharatiya Janasangh, from a young age, just 17 years old.

Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from his home state and was a college-level table tennis champion.

His early political career

Radhakrishnan rose steadily at the local political levels. His early political career was in Tamil Nadu, his birthplace, particularly influenced by the work of the BJP and the RSS.

Elected to Lok Sabha and his tenure

He was elected to the Lok Sabha (lower house of India) twice from the Coimbatore constituency, first in 1998 and second in 1999. During his Lok Sabha tenure, he chaired the Standing Committee on Textiles and participated in other key committees related to public sector undertakings and finance.

Also did state level leadership

From 2004 to 2007, he served as the state president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. He also led campaigns and public relations tours, including a notable 19,000 km, 93-day journey across Tamil Nadu focusing on river linking, anti-drug campaign, anti-terrorism and social issues.

Then appointed to the post of Governor

Moving forward and rising in constitutional roles, he was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand in February 2023. And then took additional charge of Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry in early 2024. And lastly in July 2024, he was made the Governor of Maharashtra, which is currently an important post.

Recently, on 17 August 2025, the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) officially announced Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the post of Vice President of India, who will replace the outgoing Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The announcement was made during the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and JP Nadda.
