Step 4: Blogger Design, Layout and Settings

Once you have created your blog on Blogger, the next important step is to set up the blogger design, layout and settings. A well-designed blog is not only visually appealing but also helps visitors stay longer and engage with your content, thereby increasing your blog traffic. Let’s learn how to easily design your blog on Blogger and set up the layout.

Why Blog Design Is Important

The design of your blog is the first impression your visitors have. If your layout looks cluttered or hard to navigate, people will leave, no matter how good your content is.

A good design should be:

Simple and clean
Easy to navigate
Mobile-friendly
Load fast
Visually appealing but not overloaded

1. Open and Go to the Blogger dashboard

Step 1: Open any web browser and go to Blogger.com. Click on the “Sign In” button.

Step 2: Sign in using your Gmail account credentials and enter your email and password, then click “Next” to proceed.

Step 3: Once you’re logged in, you’ll be directed to the Blogger homepage. On the top-left corner, click three lines (menu icon) to view a list of blogs. Select your blog by clicking on its name.

Step 4: Your blog’s Blogger dashboard will now open.

✓ From here, you can manage and write posts, settings, layout, and many more things.

2. Add Blog to Home Screen

Step 1: Open your Blogger dashboard and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Select “Add to Home screen” from the menu options.

Step 3: Confirm the shortcut name and tap “Add.” (you can adit name)

Step 4: The shortcut icon will appear on your home screen.

Step 5: Tap the ”icon’‘ to quickly access your Blogger dashboard.

✓ Now you can open your blog quickly and easily without needing to log in again and again.

3. Theme Setup

Choose a theme based on your interests (tech, fashion, travel, food, etc.)

Step 1: Go to Blogger Dashboard and click on the “Theme” option in the left sidebar.

Step 2: Scroll through the available themes and select a theme you like.

Step 3: After selecting a theme:

3.1 – Customise: Click “Customize” below your chosen theme. This opens the Blogger Theme Designer, where you can:

1. Change the background color or image

2. Adjust the font size, style, and color

3. Modify the width and layout structure

4. Edit the appearance of links, titles, and body text

5. When you’re satisfied with the look, you can see a live preview (below) and after click the “Save Button” (below).

3.2 – Preview: Tap on “Preview” to see how the theme will look on your blog.

√ Once done, click “Apply” to activate the theme on your blog.

✓ After choosing and feeling satisfied, review the theme and appreciate the work done.

4. Add a Favicon

The favicon is the small icon that appears in browser tabs. To change it:

1. Open Blogger dashboard and tap the left-hand menu. and tap on Setting.

2. Scroll and tap on “Favicon’.

3. Tap on “SELECT ICON FILE”, choose a square image under 100KB from your device, and then tap “SAVE” to apply the favicon to your blog.

✓ Choose a simple and recognizable design for your favicon. Since it’s displayed in a small size, clarity is essential for visibility.

5. Layout Settings

5.1. Add Site Logo – Site Identity

The logo gives your blog its identity. To add:

Step 1: Go to your Blogger dashboard and click on Layout in the left-hand menu.

Step 2: In the Layout section, locate the “Header” and click the edit pencil icon next to it.

Step 3: In the “Configure Header” popup:

1. Click the box under Image that write “No image”.

2. Choose whether to upload an image from your computer or paste an image URL.

3. Select how you want the image placed:

Behind title and description
Instead of title and description
Description placed after the image

Click “Save“.

✓ You can choose to display the logo instead of text, or alongside the title. if your logo includes your blog name and tagline, this option gives the cleanest and most professional look.

5.2. Now go to the “Layout” tab from the sidebar. Here you can:

• Add or remove widgets

• Control the sidebar, header, footer and main post area

• Rearrange sections by drag-and-drop

• Some common gadgets to add:

Search bar ✓
Popular posts ✓
About me ✓
Follow by email ✓
Social media icons ✓
Contact form ✓

👉🏾 Just click “Add gadgets”, choose from the list and configure as needed.

5. Enable mobile-friendly view

Most users will visit your blog from a mobile device. Go to Themes > Mobile and make sure “Mobile version” is enabled. You can see what your blog looks like on a phone.

✓ Note: If you don’t see this option in your theme, it’s possible that you’ve chosen a new Blogger template that’s already mobile-friendly. In such a case, you don’t need to enable the mobile version separately.

6. Save and preview your blog

Once everything is set up, click “View blog” in the top left corner. View your blog as visitors would. Make sure:

✓ The navigation is clear

✓ The text is readable

✓ All links are working

✓ The blog looks good on both mobile and desktop

Quick tips for good blog design

1. Use white space: don’t clutter your blog with too many elements

2. Limit to 2-3 colors: keep it consistent

4. Use readable fonts: avoid cursive or fancy fonts for main text

5. Highlight important sections: use bold text or boxes don’t add too many widgets
