4 Astronauts – Ax-4: and The Ax-4 mission is the fourth manned space mission sent by a private company named Axiom Space. This mission was sent from Earth to space in June 2025 through SpaceX’s famous Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket.
The objective of this mission was to go to the International Space Station (ISS) and stay there for about 14 days and do scientific, technical and public awareness activities.
Why is Ax-4 mission special? (4 Astronauts)
The Ax-4 mission is special because 4 astronauts from four different countries including India, America, Poland and Hungary participated in it.
These 4 astronauts not only represented their respective countries, but also participated in science experiments, space technology and education related activities during the entire mission.
Who are 4 Astronauts?
1. Peggy Whitson
Peggy Whitson is an American biochemistry researcher and astronaut working for Axiom Space. She was born on 9 February 1960 in Beaconsfield (near farm), Mount Ayr, Iowa, USA.
In the family, Peggy Whitson’s husband’s name is Clarence Sams. He is a biochemist and works at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. She is the daughter of Keith and Beth Whitson. She has one sister and two brothers.
In education, she passed 12th from Mount Ayr High School in 1978. In 1981, she did B.Sc. (Biology & Chemistry subjects) from Iowa Wesleyan College. Then completed Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Rice University, Houston in 1985 to 86.
After that, she joined NASA in 1986, then became a scientist in the Shuttle‑Mir program and the first woman commander of the ISS. And while staying at NASA, she spent a total of 665 days in space.
Peggy Whitson role in Ax-4 mission: This time Peggy Whitson has been made the commander of the mission, that is, the responsibility of the entire mission was in her hands. Main tasks in Ax-4 mission:
1. To plan and conduct the entire mission. And work on mission to complete and success mission.
2. To cooperate in scientific experiments on the ISS (International Space Station).
3. To be especially active in experiments like gaze & coordination and multimedia outreach.
2. Captain Shubhanshu Shukla
Shubhanshu Shukla is a Group Captain and Test Pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Gaganyatri (astronaut) of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Shubhanshu Shukla was born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.
In the Family, Father’s name is Shambhu Dayal Shukla, who is a retired government officer and mother’s name is Asha Shukla, a housewife. He has two elder sisters (Nidhi and Shuchi) and wife Kamna Mishra, who is a dentist. They also have a son.
He did his schooling at City Montessori School, Lucknow. Then he did B.Sc. (Computer Science subject) from NDA in 2005. Later completed M.Tech. Aerospace Engineering from IAF Academy, IISc, Bengaluru.
As experience, he has flown 2000+ hours on SU‑30, MiG‑21, MiG‑29 etc. commissioned in 2006. Then in 2019, he was selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan. And then trained for ISS in both Russia and India.
Role in Ax-4: Shubhanshu Shukla was the pilot in this mission. His job was to launch the Dragon capsule (start the flight), fly it in the right direction during the flight, and finally connect it properly to the space station (ISS). And the main tasks in Ax-4 mission:
1. Research to understand and prevent weakness of the body in microgravity.
2. Research on microalgae in which small water plants are used for food, oxygen and fuel in space.
3. Study of tardigrades in which research is done on micro organisms that survive in difficult conditions.
3. Slawosz Uznanski Wisniewski
Slawosz Uznanski Wisniewski is a Polish astronaut and engineer working for the European Space Agency (ESA). He was born on 12 April 1984 in Łódź, Poland.
Parents, Slawosz Uznanski father Piotr is an art historian and his mother is Maya. He spent his childhood in Łódź, Poland. He was a member of the scout and sailing team.
Slawosz did his education from Adam Asnyk High School, Łódź. Then in 2008, he completed his M.Sc. from Łódź University of Technology and after that Diploma Engineering from University of Nantes/Polytech Nantes, France. And then in 2011 he completed his Ph.D. in radiation‑tolerant space systems, Aix‑Marseille University, France.
Previous work: He worked as an engineer for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, where he developed radiation-resistant systems. In 2022, he was selected as ESA’s reserve astronaut and received training with NASA, ESA and Axiom Space. And selected for the Ax‑4 mission in 2025.
Ax‑4 role: Mission specialist who performs Earth imaging, vision‑coordination experiments, scientific and public awareness activities from the observation module of the ISS. More work in Ax-4:
1. He conducted a scientific experiment related to vision-hand coordination in space to improve efficiency of work in space.
2. He took pictures of the Earth from the observation module (Cupola) of the space station, which are useful for environmental and remote sensing.
4. Tibor Kapu
Tibor Kapu is a Hungarian mechanical engineer. He was born on 5 November 1991 in Vasarosnameny (some reports have Nyiregyhaza), Hungary.
Tibor Kapu studied at Krudy Gyula High School, Nyiregyhaza. He was interested in cricket and skydiving since childhood; he chose mechanical engineering inspired by his father. Then he did B.Sc. & M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering from Budapest University of Technology & Economics (BME).
Experience: Tibor Kapu has worked in the pharma industry, hybrid car batteries and space radiation protection systems. He is an experienced skydiver (38 jumps) and was selected under the HUNOR program and received training from NASA-Axiom.
Ax-4 Role: Mission Specialist. He became the first person from Hungary to step on the space station. And the third astronaut on the ISS from Hungary. Main tasks in Ax‑4:
1. They will test computer interfaces and technical systems on the space station (ISS).
2. They will perform a number of experiments related to science, engineering and communications.
3. They will evaluate the reliability and safety of equipment used in space missions.
4 Astronaus and Historic Mission
Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) was not only important from the point of view of science and technological research, but this mission also proved to be a strong step towards international cooperation, human courage and humanity’s future in space.
In this historic mission, 4 experienced and talented astronauts from India, America, Poland and Hungary together showed that the limits are only on Earth, not in space.
These 4 astronauts not only carried out scientific experiments, but also took global partnership to new heights. Whether it is research or public outreach, the Ax-4 mission expanded human possibilities in every field.
The 4 astronauts involved in this mission have together set an example that will inspire generations to come and will make the foundation of future international space travel including India’s Gaganyaan mission even stronger.
In this mission organized by Axiom Space, this team of 4 astronauts has become a living symbol of global cooperation, solidarity and scientific approach, showing that when representatives of four countries work together, even space cannot become their boundaries.
