🛑 Attack: What happened
On April 22, 2025, terrorists opened fire on tourists in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, killing 26 people, including 25 Hindu tourists and a Nepali national, and injuring over 20 others. The attackers reportedly asked the victims to recite Islamic verses before opening fire. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

• India suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan.

• India banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, including Dawn, Geo, ARY and Samaa, for spreading inflammatory content after the Pahalgam attack.
• The ban also includes journalists such as Irshad Bhatti, Asma Shirazi, Umar Cheema and Muneeb Farooq to prevent misinformation and maintain security.

• Pakistan has denied its involvement and demanded an impartial and credible investigation. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that India’s allegations are baseless and Pakistan stands against terrorism. He also warned that any interference in the Indus Water Treaty would be treated as an act of war.
• Pakistan suspended the 1972 Shimla Agreement, which was the basis for bilateral talks between the two countries.
• Pakistan suspended all trade relations with India.
• Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian aircraft, leading to an increase in the duration of flights from India to Europe and North America.

• United States: President Trump and Vice President Vance condemned the attack and expressed strong support to India.
• Russia: President Putin called it a “brutal crime” and pledged cooperation with India against terrorism.
• United Kingdom: Rishi Sunak called the attack “barbaric” and said “terrorism will never win.”

• Authorities closed 48 of the 87 government -authorised tourist resorts in Kashmir as a precautionary measure.

• The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased, ₹2 lakh for the seriously injured and ₹1 lakh for the minor injured.
