What is Mesothelioma?

It is found in rocks and soil. Yes it is still there in some countries, USA, Russia, China, Brazil, Kazakhstan, India and some other countries. It used to be very prevalent in the past. But it has been banned in many countries due to the serious disease like mesothelioma cancer. However it may still be there in some old buildings, ceilings, floors and products.

Main causes of mesothelioma

1. Asbestos exposure – This is the main cause in more than 80% of cases. This means coming in contact with asbestos.

2. Radiation exposure – In some cases radiation is also responsible. This means coming in contact with some harmful radiation. Like during Time for therapy.

3. Zeolites – Some natural minerals have a structure similar to asbestos. And cause a disease like mesothelioma.

4. Genetic factors – If someone in the family has had mesothelioma, then the risk may increase due to contact with each other.

5. Genetic factorsSome people are more likely to develop mesothelioma because they have certain genes that make them more susceptible to the disease.

Types of mesothelioma

1. Pleural mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of the lungs)

• This is the most common type and is found in 85% of cases.

• Main symptoms – shortness of breath, chest pain, cough and weight loss.

2. Peritoneal mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of the abdomen)

• This affects the abdominal membrane and is found in 25% of cases.

• Main symptoms – swelling in the abdomen, pain, loss of appetite and indigestion.

3. Pericardial mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of the heart)

• This is very rare and is seen in only 1% of cases.

• Main symptoms – chest pain, irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath.

4. Testicular mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of the testicle)

• This is the rarest and most dangerous type and is found in very few cases.

• Main symptoms – Swelling and pain in the testicles.

How to prevent mesothelioma?

1. Work in an asbestos-free area and environment.

2. Wear protective gear (masks, goggles and gloves).

3. Seek advice before constructing or renovating buildings containing asbestos.

4. Take appropriate safety precautions when removing or handling asbestos-containing materials.

5. Smoking should always be avoided, as it can further increase the risk from asbestos exposure.

6. Get regular medical checkups done at work and once a week if you live in a nearby area.
